about

This is my cover of Hurt by Trent Reznor. Hurt is a pure, bare, elemental outpouring of human suffering so simply and beautifully conveyed. There is a strength that comes out of this voice of despair, like someone who has reached rock bottom, and in doing so has found the strength to get through and possibly, with the last line, find another way to live.

lyrics

I hurt myself today,
To see if I'd still feel.
I focus on the pain,
The only thing that's real.
The needle tears a hole,
The old familiar sting;
Try to kill it all away,
But I remember everything.

What have I become,
My sweetest friend?
Everyone I know,
Goes away in the end.
You could have it all,
My empire of dirt.
I will let you down,
I will make you hurt...

I wear this crown of thorns,
Upon my liar's chair,
Full of broken thoughts,
I cannot repair.
Beneath the stains of time,
The feelings disappear.
You are someone else,
I am still right here.

What have I become,
My sweetest friend?
Everyone I know,
Goes away in the end.
And you could have it all,
My empire of dirt,
I will let you down,
I will make you hurt.

If I could start again,
A million miles away,
I would keep myself,
I would find a way.
