about

The question of why we hurt the ones we love resonates deeply because it articulates an emotional paradox at the heart of human relationships – that we have the capacity to love and destroy each other at the same time.

the song tells stories of a cast of characters, from different backgrounds and circumstances, all living out this same heart-breaking reality in their lives, in different ways and with different consequences.

The choruses were inspired by someone I knew who left her children, believing it was the best thing for everyone. In the first chorus, I had an image in my mind of the children being left behind by a mother who believes wholeheartedly that she is doing the right thing, but can’t see the awful reality of the pain she’s leaving behind for others to endure.

There is a dichotomy in this song in these different points of view: those who leave and those who are left behind. Personally, I want to believe that staying and working through this kind of pain will make you come out the other side stronger.

In the recording, I think the relentless, rolling tattoo of the snare brushes, with thr hauntingly beautiful Weissenborn lap steel melodies, conjure these patterns of pain we play out in our lives sometimes.

lyrics

Ones You Love The Most

Brother he don't come round anymore
Packed his bags and then he slammed the door
Woke up sick and tired of life's cruel jokes
Like why we hurt the ones we love the most

Honey was a mother and a wife
It's been one of those days all of her life
Said that she was moving to the coast
Where they don't hurt the ones they love the most

They say goodbye, say goodbye
Their faces white as snow
We always hurt the ones we love the most

Hotel sign says please do not disturb
Better bite your tongue and eat your words
Talking's only gonna make things worse
And you will hurt the ones you love the most

So say goodbye, say goodbye
To all that you hold close
You're on your knees with nowhere left to go
Tell me why, tell me why
Heaven only knows
Why we hurt the ones we love the most

Sister don't know who she wants to be
Halfway from a teardrop to the sea
She was born with genius and soul
Still she hurts the one she loves the most

Say goodbye, say goodbye
Vanish like a ghost
So you won't hurt the ones you love the most
Say goodbye, say goodbye
I'm leaving 'cos I know
That I will hurt the ones
I will hurt the ones I love the most
