about

This song came from a sense that there are moments in the dead of night when you feel things so deeply, you are connected to your feelings so strongly, you can feel more alive than you do in the course of your everyday life. I suppose it is because you’re in a state of being intensely connected to who you are, to the deepest part of yourself. It was this emotional place that I wanted to try and capture.

In the last verse there’s a line: “I see the beauty in the darkest night.” I really believe this. I think there can be something incredibly beautiful about being connected to a strong emotion even if it's a really sad one - often especially if it's a really sad one. I think that’s probably very representative of the way I write – seeing the beauty in the darkest night. Fully facing and being connected with pain can be really beautiful and powerful, as well as a really terrible thing.

This final recording was quite similar to our early demos, but with the addition of a super atmospheric ebow melody played on a resonator. It subtly wails in and out in the background and really makes the track.

lyrics

Night Before The Dawn

I take my hopes out to sea at night
And the stars all tag along
I can see you falling through my dreams
In the night before the dawn

I'm holding on to some hopeless dream
When I know that you are gone
But I can feel your love holding me
In the night before the dawn

Then the sunlight comes to close my eyes
And the birds sing their song
But I've never seen the world so bright
As the night before the dawn

There are days when I could live or die
When I'm barely hanging on
Knowing you will never lie with me
In the night before the dawn

I see the beauty in the darkest night
In the cold, collected calm
And I see your face looking into mine
The night before the dawn
Yes I see your face looking into mine
The night before the dawn
